Everything you said is true for me too. My love for Ancient Romans and Greeks and basically HISTORY came from these books. Before I read this series I tried to read books that my parents gave to me but I never red for the joy of it. That was until my mum bought a 99p book for christmas and admittedly, I judged by the cover and started to read the more sparkly and colourful books first. I think most of them I never finished. So eventually I read the Thieves of Ostia. Now before, I had always read 'childish' books I think this (I was 8 maybe) was the first I would say 'not so childish' book I had ever read. This had an actual plot that meant something and characters that were interesting. It wasn't hard to read them at all even though the storyline could have easily been for older generations. I think my mum could have jumped up and down with joy when I finished it and asked for more. Thus started my love affair with books.
Caroline Lawrence should realise that she actually made a difference in my life. It wasn't just another book. It was 'the' book that I can honestly say changed my life and made me who I am today in many aspects. Almost like the butterfly affect.
Anyway, these books are the best pre teen books out there. You don't have to be interested with history before you start. I wasn't. But I was when I finished.

And when I read the last book I felt sad because as I grew up, so did the characters, more or less mirroring my age. I have only just turned 18. And I have read many books since then. And I can tell you they still sit on my top shelf for my favourite books and always will.

I agree about the interchangable narratives. Somehow, I think that if they hadn't been formatted differently, I'd have done a Crossed and gotten halfway through a chapter then have to read it from the other one's POV...I never thought it might have been intentional though. Oh, and I've got Blood Red Road on my physical pile. Seems like I have something to read next ;-) Great review.
